If you’re an avid reader, you’ve likely experienced the dreaded reading slump—those moments when no book, no matter how many rave reviews or five-star ratings, seems to catch your interest. It can be frustrating and disheartening, especially when reading is something you’ve always loved. You pick up a book, try to push through, but nothing seems to stick. Suddenly, the hobby that used to bring you so much joy feels like a chore.
Reading slumps happen to the best of us. Whether it’s due to stress, burnout, or simply not finding the right book, it can leave you feeling disconnected from a passion that once brought you comfort and escape. But the good news? There are ways to climb out of the slump and rekindle your love for reading.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you break free from a reading slump:
1. Take a Break and Don’t Feel Guilty
First things first: give yourself permission to take a break from reading without feeling guilty about it. Sometimes we push ourselves to read because we feel like we should—whether it’s to keep up with a challenge or because we haven’t finished the latest bestseller. But reading isn’t supposed to be stressful.
If forcing yourself to read is adding to your frustration, step back. It’s okay to take a breather. Engage in other hobbies, watch a favorite TV series, or spend time outside. Giving your brain a break might reignite your desire to read again naturally, without pressure.
2. Revisit an Old Favorite
When you’re in a reading slump, picking up something familiar can be comforting. Revisit a book that you know you love. Whether it’s an old classic from your childhood or a series that brought you joy in the past, re-reading a favorite can remind you of why you fell in love with reading in the first place.
Since you already know the story, it takes away the pressure of getting into something new, and instead allows you to simply enjoy the experience of the book. It’s like spending time with an old friend.
3. Change Genres
Sometimes, a reading slump happens because we’re stuck in the same genre, reading similar types of stories over and over. If you’re burned out on fantasy, try a cozy mystery. If thrillers aren’t doing it for you, dive into a romance or a memoir. Stepping out of your usual genre can introduce you to new perspectives and writing styles, giving your mind something fresh to engage with.
Exploring different genres can reignite your excitement for reading, and you might even discover a new type of book that surprises you!
Trying out different types of books and genres can sound and seem expensive, but I love to use Kindle Unlimited at all times. This subscription service that Amazon has introduced allows you to check out ten books at a time. The Kindle Unlimited platform is perfect for exploring new books and genres at a cheap monthly cost. It is like Netflix for books.
4. Embrace Audiobooks
Audiobooks are a fantastic way to break through a reading slump, especially if you’re struggling to sit down with a physical book. You can listen to audiobooks while doing everyday tasks like cleaning, commuting, or exercising, which takes the pressure off having to carve out time specifically for reading.
I love audiobooks for when I need to get up and do chores or when I cannot find time to read. We all have those moments where we want to read but just cannot find the time to do so; audiobooks help mitigate that problem by creating an environment for multitasking and feeling accomplished.
I am an Amazon girl, and I love to use Audible to find all the different types of audiobooks. Audible provides so many options and suggestions to help you find what you are looking for.
5. Read Something Completely Different
If you’re typically drawn to fiction, why not try non-fiction? Or, if non-fiction isn’t working, dive into a graphic novel or poetry. Reading something totally outside your usual preferences can shake things up. A fascinating biography or an inspiring self-help book could capture your attention in a way you didn’t expect.
Sometimes, reading slumps happen because our minds crave change. You’re more likely to find something that clicks by exploring different formats or subjects. When I find myself in a reading slump and romance, fantasy, or revisiting an old favorite do not pull me out, I love to mix it up by trying something that is not typically my style, and that usually does the trick.
6. Join a Book Club or Buddy Read
Being part of a book community can be incredibly motivating. If you’ve been struggling to get through a book on your own, joining a book club or buddy reading with a friend can give you a sense of accountability and excitement. Discussing the book with others helps bring it to life in a new way, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally pick for yourself.
If you are just getting into reading or do not have anyone to talk to about reading, finding reading groups on social media can be very helpful. When I need a recommendation, I always go to the reading groups I have joined on Facebook to see if there is anything or anyone there who will help.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to DNF (Did Not Finish)
This might be the hardest tip for many avid readers, but it’s okay to stop reading a book if it’s not doing it for you. Not every book will be a winner, and forcing yourself to finish something you’re not enjoying can contribute to the slump. Let yourself put down a book guilt-free. There are too many great books out there to waste time on something that doesn’t excite you.
Final Thoughts
Reading slumps happen to even the most dedicated book lovers. The key is not to stress about it or force yourself into something that doesn’t feel right. Take your time, explore different genres, and rediscover the joy of reading at your own pace. By trying some of these tips, you’ll likely find yourself climbing out of that slump and back into the wonderful world of books in no time.
